Anthrax Prevention

Anthrax Decontamination

Standard Precautions should be used when dealing with an anthrax outbreak to minimize exposure to healthcare workers and other patients. Anthrax is generally not retransmitted through the air and thus does not require abnormal isolation procedure. Anthrax is not known to transmit from person to person.

The use of a peroxide or other oxidizing agent will break down the bacteria over time. This is one method used to clean a contaminated site. A catalyst is often added to the oxidant to increase the speed of the process

If it is suspected that someone may have been exposed to anthrax, a common preventive treatment is a prophylactic dose of antibiotics.
