Anthrax Prevention

The risk of inhalation of anthrax spores can be greatly reduced with a HEPA filter. This filter is rated at 99.97% efficiency at particles of 0.3 microns. If direct contamination is feared, but wearing a biohazard suit is not an option (such as in combat), a mask with a HEPA filter can be worn that will reduce the exposure to a level that is not harmful in the majority of cases.

If a more passive infection is feared (such as by particles spreading through a room, especially in a mail processing plant), an air purifier equipped with a HEPA filter can be placed in a room or attached to a central air system to remove any airborne spores. By keeping the air constantly filtered, the spread of anthrax spores can be limited making it less likely to affect multiple workers or family members.

An anthrax vaccine is available that is believed to be 93% effective at preventing all forms of anthrax infection. It is recommended that all servicemen and women in the US military get this vaccine. Veterinarians who are going to work in countries with minimal veterinary regulation and livestock health control may also consider being vaccinated.
