Anthrax

Anthrax Prevention

How is Anthrax Transmitted?

In nature, anthrax most often infects herbivores. Most natural human transmission occurs with people who work closely with these animals (including sheep, goats, cattle, etc.). The virus can be transmitted through the skin with contact with an infected animal or animal tissue, by inhaling the spores, or by ingesting infected animal tissue. The spores can remain in the ground where an animal’s remains are located for years after the death of the infected animal.

Anthrax has also been developed in a weaponized form by different governments and individuals, though some countries, including the US, claim to have destroyed their stock of the bacteria. The US military offers and suggests to all servicemen and women that they get vaccinated for anthrax, though currently they may opt out of the anthrax vaccination program without any punishment or status change.
